There are many stories behind this temple. It is believed that when Lord Shiva was carrying the burnt body of Goddess Sati, her necklace fell at this place. Hence the name Maihar which means “mother’s necklace” in local language. The temple is believed to be very old but it was renovated and developed by different rulers and devotees over time.
