The History and Significance of
The Skanda Purana mentions the first incarnation of Tulja Bhavani. In the Krita Yuga, Anubhuti, the wife of Sage Kardama, performed intense penance at Yamunachal, which is present-day Tuljapur. A demon named Kukkar disrupted her penance and insulted her. Anubhuti prayed to Goddess Bhagavati for liberation, and the goddess, armed with weapons, appeared and defeated the demon in battle. Afterward, Anubhuti requested the goddess to stay there forever, and it is said that she has remained here permanently.
Since she swiftly fulfills devotees’ wishes, she was called Twarita Bhavani. Over time, the name changed from Turja Bhavani to Tulja Bhavani. It is believed that the idol of the goddess in the temple is always in a state of motion, meaning it appears to be constantly moving. Such a temple, where the idol seems to be in motion, is not found anywhere else in India or the world. In reality, the idol doesn’t move, but it creates an illusion of movement to the eyes. It is said that Chhatrapati Shivaji frequently visited this temple to seek Tulja Bhavani’s blessings, a belief widely held in the Maratha region.
