The history and significance of the Chilkur Balaji Temple

Once a devotee of Lord Srinivasa used to visit Tirupati every year to have darshan of the Seven Hills Lord. One day due to ill health, the devotee couldn’t go to Tirupati. While he was feeling sad about it, the Lord appeared in his vision and said, “Don’t be sad. Even if you can’t come to Tirupati, for your “…I have appeared in the forest. Go to that place and dig once and you will find me,” the Lord said in a dream. So, the devotee went to the place mentioned in the dream and started digging a mound.

While digging, suddenly the tool hit a stone idol and blood started oozing from the idol. “Oh, blood is coming from the idol! This must be the idol the Lord spoke of and I hit it by mistake,” the devotee thought feeling very sad. Then, the voice of the Lord was heard

“Wash the idol with milk.” Following the voice’s instruction the idol of Sri Venkateswara Swam along with Sri Devi and Bhu Devi was found in that mound. Finding three deities in a single idol is very rare.

The idol was consecrated according to scriptures and a temple was built. Thus as a self-manifested deity with both consorts Sri Venkateswara is worshipped with great devotion by devotees from the two Telugu states and other states. In 1963 Goddess Rajyalakshmi was also consecrated.

The goddess is depicted with three hands holding lotuses and a fourth hand blessing devotees. While doing Maha Pradakshina, you’ll see a banyan tree, under which there’s a Hanuman Ji temple. Wonderful pujas are performed there too. They also provide annadanam (free food) here, but only on one day—every Friday at 1:30 PM.
