The Chamundeshwari Temple is available on top of Chamundi Hills, 13 kilometers from Mysuru city in Karnataka, India. It is a special place for Hindus, named after Goddess Chamundeshwari, a strong form of Shakti. People believe she killed the demon Mahishasura here long ago. The temple is one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas, where Sati’s hair is said to have fallen. It is 3,300 feet above sea level, and one can climb up 1,008 steps or drive up. The Hoysala kings constructed the initial small temple in the 12th century, and subsequently, the Vijayanagara kings constructed the large tower in the 17th century. More than 10 lakh (1 million) pilgrims visit annually.

This temple is renowned for its splendor and Navaratri festival, during which the goddess is adorned in nine ways. This temple was much enjoyed by the Mysuru Maharajas for centuries and they provided it with gold and jewels. There is a large statue of Nandi, 16 feet high, at the 700th step, which was crafted in 1664. One can see the city of Mysuru from the top along with the palace. It’s open from 7:30 AM to 9:00 PM, and free meals are provided every day from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM. It’s a quiet and sacred place for all.

Procedure To Follow The Chamundeshwari Temple

By Road
  • From Mysuru City: The temple is on Chamundi Hills which is far from 13 km from Mysuru. You can drive or take a taxi. The road is good and well maintained by the official authorities and it takes about 30 minutes to reach.
  • Buses: Karnataka State Buses (KSRTC) go from Mysuru City Bus Stand to the temple every 30 minutes. The ticket costs Rs. 20 to Rs. 40. try to take auto if you are unable to take bus. The bus ride takes 45 minutes.
  • Auto Rickshaw: An auto from Mysuru costs Rs. 200 to Rs. 300 one way. It will drop you near the temple entrance when compared to the bus.
By Walking
  • Steps: after reaching the hills then You can climb 1,008 steps from the bottom of Chamundi Hills. The steps start near the big Nandi statue. It takes usually take 1 to 2 hours which is depending on how fast you walk. Wear good shoes and carry water.
